Myositis
Myositis is a very rare disease. It is a term for chronic, and progressive inflammation of the muscles. It is also associated with the skin rashes problem. The symptoms can appear rapidly or also gradually over time. The patient will experience pain in muscles, fatigue, breathing problem, soreness, and also get trouble in swallowing.
The disease can affect both adult & children, and women are more likely to suffer from this disease.
Myositis Types
There are five types of Myositis:
Dermatomyositis
It is amongst the easiest type of myositis to diagnose due to the appearance of purple and red rashes in the form of the heliotrope flower. The rashes are mostly on face, eyelids, chest, neck, and back. The rashes can also be on the joints like knuckles, elbows, knees, and toes. You will also experience the pain in muscles. The other symptoms are:
- Dry, and rough skin
- Fatigue and trouble in getting up after seated
- Weakness in the neck, hip, back, and shoulder muscles.
- The problem in swallowing food
- Inflammation in joints
Inclusion-body Myositis:
This myositis is the only type which is mostly found in men in comparison to women. Generally, it occurs in people after reaching the age of 50. The disease begins with pain and weakness in the muscles of wrists and fingers plus thigh muscles. The weakness in the muscles is asymmetrical thus one side of the body can be more affected than others. The symptoms are:
- Problem in walking
- Losing balance and coordination problems
- Problem in getting up from seated position
- Weakness in muscles
Juvenile Myositis
As the name indicates, juvenile myositis occurs in the people age less than 18. Girls have twice the chances of developing it in comparison to boys. The symptoms are:
- Reddish-purple rashes on eyelids, and joints
- Ache in stomach
- Difficulty in reaching overhead, like while combing the hair.
- Lumps of calcium under skin
- Bumps over knuckles, elbows, and knees
Polymyositis
Polymyositis begins from the trunk of the body and then expands from there. There are different cases in polymyositis each of which case is unique. The symptoms are as like the above ones.
Toxic myositis
This myositis is extremely rare and is caused by some medicines and unauthorized drugs. The symptoms are common as like the other myositis. Once the people stop taking the affecting medicines, improvement is seen.
Causes
Myositis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system of the body attacks the muscles. There is no such known cause of this disease, however, it is mostly due to infection and injury. The other factors can be:
- Autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus
- Viruses
- Toxic drugs
Diagnosis
Myositis is a very difficult disease to diagnose as it is a very rare disease, and the most common symptoms are weakness in muscles and fatigue which are also common in other diseases.
